Remembrance Day 2008

2008 marks the 90th anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War One, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

Thoughts of the terrible slaughter of trench warfare, which gave rise to the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance, seemed to demand reflection.

Remembrance day which is also known as Poppy Day, Armistice Day (the event it commemorates) or Veterans Day – is a day to commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War.

But it is the First World War that continues to be remembered. The war diaries of Australian Army units on the Western Front record the event in stoic and uneventful detail.

All Australian soldiers who served or fought in that war are now dead and the baton of the youthful, colonial Australians has been handed to the next generation of Australians.

Lest we forget.
